The pups are doing well this week. I will be uploading new pics and hopefully some video clips of each pup this weekend. Developmentally, they are alert and acting more like dogs. They walk well and have been great about using the potty area in their whelping box. This weekend we will graduate them to a larger pen with a bed, play area and a potty area. They will also start real food this weekend and take their first trip outside, provided the weather cooperates.
I am pleased with the litter overall. It is a challenge to evaluate pups and consider who is destined for the show ring and breeding program and who would be best suited to a life as a companion dog. Honestly, I could probably show most of the pups but like other litters, will chose only the best of that litter -- not what "could finish".
The pups are starting to try to play a bit. We have watched as they will decide they can use their mouths and try to "bite" their sibling's leg or head or ear. This morning I watched Hot Pink girl try to use her paw to get someone's attention -- the first time I had seen that. We will be introducing them to appropriate toys and I have a stack of 5 puppy kongs ready for their sharp little teeth!
Size wise -- we are going to have to get creative to weigh them as they outgrew my kitchen scale I use. I had 2 into the vet this week to address some puppy acne/dermatitis due to them nursing on each other. Green boy (largest) weighed 5 pounds 10 ounces on Tuesday and Black boy (one of the 2 smaller males right now) weighed over 4 pounds. They are just about too big to pick up with one hand any longer!
Stay tuned for some pics this weekend.
